Our oversize load transport services

We take the whole file: cargo assessment, carrier selection, the right equipment and coordination of the logistics authorizations. It extends our road transport service to the loads a standard trailer will not take.

Twenty-five years of freight brokerage give us a network that answers fast on the loads nobody wants to take, in Quebec and everywhere else in Canada.

Oversize loads and lowboy hauls

A piece that is too wide, too tall or too long travels on a lowboy, an extendable or a gooseneck trailer. We choose the equipment from the real dimensions of the piece, not from what happens to be sitting available.

Heavy haul and exceptional loads

Past the allowable weights, axle weight distribution decides everything. On an exceptional load, we coordinate the multi-axle configurations and hydraulic trailers in our network, with the cargo insurance that goes with them.

Permit and escort coordination

The carrier holds the permit; we make sure it is the right class, valid for the right period, with the escorts and the signage in place before loading. This is specialized transport: convoy safety is decided at that step.
Twenty-five years of moving what fits nowhere else.

Special permits for an oversize load

In Quebec, your load is oversize as soon as it passes one of the thresholds in the load and size limits: 2.6 m of width, 4.15 m of height, 12.5 m of length for a single vehicle and 23 m for a tractor-semitrailer.

Past that, you need a special permit issued by the ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable, in seven classes according to the nature of the excess.

General permit or specific permit

The general permit covers repeat moves: up to one year with no specified route, one month with an imposed route. The specific permit covers a single round trip, on a set route, for a maximum of seven consecutive days.

The choice changes your project schedule: that is the first question we ask you.

Escorts, signage and speed limits

The conditions attached to the permit vary with the dimensions, the load and the route. Permit fees set by the Ministry come on top of the transport; we state them in the quote rather than on the invoice.

  • headlights on at all times and a working 360° amber beacon;
  • compliant signs, flags and directional arrows;
  • reduced speed limits and an imposed route;
  • escort vehicles, depending on the case.

What moves as an oversize load

The loads we coordinate most often in Quebec, each with its dominant constraint: a wind turbine blade is a problem of length and turning radius, a transformer is a problem of mass and bridge capacity.

  • heavy machinery and jobsite equipment: excavators, loaders, bulldozers;
  • farm equipment: tractors, combines, seeders;
  • industrial components: transformers, vessels, tanks, steel structures;
  • wind turbine parts and mining or forestry equipment;
  • new prefabricated buildings and housing modules, which fall under a separate permit class.

What oversize load transport costs

The price does not read off the kilometre. It is built on the dimensions and the mass, the permit class, the number of escort vehicles, the length of the approved route, the season and the standing time at loading.

A load that goes from 2.6 m to 3.5 m of width changes escort category, which is often the line that moves the most. We show you these factors in the quote so the trade-offs stay possible.

Our oversize load transport method

    1. You share the dimensions, the weight, the origin and the destination. A photo of the piece is often enough to settle the equipment.
    2. We check the excess against the standards in force and determine the permit class required.
    3. We select, in our network, the carrier that has the equipment and already holds the right permit.
    4. We have the route validated: clearances under bridges, capacity of the structures, seasonal thaw restrictions.
    5. We coordinate loading, securement, a crane if needed, the escorts and the follow-up through to delivery. Step 4 is the one projects underestimate: a route refused at the last minute costs more than the rest of the file put together.

    Tell us where from and where to, and we come back with the right setup.

Oversize load transport across Quebec and beyond

We coordinate pickups and deliveries throughout Quebec, with anchor points in Montreal, Quebec City and Trois-Rivières.

For loads that stay within the standards, we cover FTL transport and LTL consolidation. A load that is simply wide or irregular, with no regulatory excess, travels on flatbed transport instead. Over long distances, intermodal deserves to be compared.

FAQ: oversize load transport in Quebec

What is an oversize load transport?

It is a transport whose loaded vehicle passes at least one of the regulatory limits on dimensions or mass. In Quebec, the common thresholds are 2.6 m of width, 4.15 m of height and 23 m of length for a tractor-semitrailer. As soon as one of those thresholds is crossed, a special permit becomes necessary.

Who issues the special permit in Quebec?

The ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable. The permit comes in seven classes, depending on whether it covers general outsized transportation, a new prefabricated building, a swimming pool, a tow truck, an overload or an exceptional case calling for an expert’s report from the Ministry. The carrier holds it; we validate the class before departure.

Is an escort always required for oversize loads?

No. The Ministry ties escorts to the dimensions, the load and the route; plenty of moves go without one. Signage, on the other hand, is almost always required: headlights on, 360° amber beacon, signs and flags. We confirm the exact setup when the permit is applied for.

How long does an oversize move take to arrange?

It depends on the class and the route. A specific permit covers seven consecutive days and is quick to prepare; an exceptional case calling for an expert’s report from the Ministry and a validation of structures takes more time. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote rather than an optimistic date.

Does the spring thaw affect oversize loads?

Yes. Load restrictions during the thaw period lower the allowable masses on part of the network and can force a postponement or a different route. It is one of the first points we check on a project planned between the end of winter and the start of spring.

Does Trans-Inter Logistik own the trailers?

No. That is by design: we have been a freight broker since 2000, so we select from a network of verified carriers the one whose equipment, permits and availability match your load. You get the right trailer rather than the one sitting idle in a yard.

Do you move oversize loads to the United States?

Yes, through our network. Every province and every state applies its own thresholds and its own permits, which calls for coordination of the authorizations from one end of the corridor to the other. For border documentation, we work with specialized partners.
